About

Moore Books came about due to the fact that it is difficult to become a published playwright in South Australia, unless one of your plays has received a professional run by an established, professional company. This is rather tricky as such companies are few and far between. Tony began self producing and consequently self publishing his plays and has now expanded to include other SA based writers' works.

Moore Books SA is owned and operated by Tony Moore and Joanna Webb.

Biography - Tony Moore

Tony Moore studied Educational Theatre under Frank Ford at The University of Adelaide with a second major in Modern European History under Dr Robert Nicol. He has been involved in theatre from the time he was eighteen and began writing in the mid eighties. He began taking his writing seriously during his time in England while he was teaching drama to young people, mostly due to his inability to find good short scripts that were not profoundly moralistic and that the students wanted to do. As a result he wrote several short sketches. This got him thinking and he began to write longer scripts.

A number of Tony’s scripts have been produced in England, where several have been published, and now in Australia but his work has also been translated into Greek and one of his short pieces was produced as part of a short play festival in Times Square, New York.

His experience as a Director began in the 70s when he became involved with the Elizabeth Repertory Company. He was the founding Chairman of the Salisbury Theatre Company and moved on to help save La Mama Theatre, Hindmarsh. A highlight of this time was the hugely successful 1992 Fringe where an astonishing number of artists used the tiny cellar theatre. In 1993 he moved to England.

Tony worked as the Production Manager at the Stag Theatre, Sevenoaks, Kent for eight years. He also became a Lighting Designer of note and is a member of the Association of Lighting Designers. Since returning to Adelaide in 2005 he has continued working in technical theatre while also producing his own, and other writer’s, new plays with Spotlight Theatre Company. He is also associated with the SA Writers Theatre. He has an ongoing relationship with Theatre Group Gumbo, a Japanese experimental theatre group who perform regularly in Australia.
